What CalAIM Actually Covers
Enhanced Care Management (ECM): Intensive care coordination for high-needs Medi-Cal members. An ECM care manager helps navigate the healthcare system, coordinates services across providers, addresses social needs, and works to prevent hospitalizations.
Community Supports: A menu of services available through each managed care plan, including home modifications, medically tailored meals, respite, transportation, and personal care and homemaker services. Not every plan offers every service, and authorization requires assessment and approval.
IHSS (In-Home Supportive Services): Funded through the state Medi-Cal program, IHSS provides authorized hours of personal care and domestic services. Authorized hours are based on assessed functional need and may range from a few hours per week to significant daily support.
What It Doesn’t Cover
Medi-Cal and CalAIM are not designed to provide unlimited in-home care. Authorized IHSS hours are capped based on assessed need. CalAIM does not cover unskilled companion care beyond what is specifically authorized, specialized memory care beyond standard personal care, or services that fall outside assessed need.
